The Town

The Town

La Tallada d’Empordà, located on the border between the mountains and the irrigation plains, seems to have its origin in the old castle located in the heart of the historic center, of which important wall locks and most of the towers of defense of the compound. Around them, the town grew little by little until it reached its current configuration a few years ago.

Now the walls and towers have remained integrated into the private houses, which have been attached to the walls in the inner part of the primitive enclosure. Some of the houses have door lintels with inscriptions from the 17th and 18th centuries, a common practice in many towns in the region.

Apart from the walled enclosure, the most notable building in the center is the church of Santa Maria, which was originally the chapel of the castle. It is a 12th-13th century Romanesque church (it appears cited in the years 1279 and 1280), with a single nave and semicircular apse. Above the apse, there is a more modern fortification, a tower similar to the ones we usually find in many churches in the Empordà.
